Get answers from your own files
The answer is often in a file you already have: a lease, a policy, a report. Add it to a chat, ask in plain words, and open the exact line behind each part of the answer.

Steps
A good answer shows where it came from
An answer is only as good as its source. When it points to the exact line it came from, you can check it in seconds instead of rereading the whole file.
Checking matters even with good tools. Stanford researchers tested leading legal research tools that answer from documents and found wrong or unsupported answers in 17% to 33% of their test questions [1].
What Tatsu can do
- Answer in plain words from the files you add, with a number on each claim.
- Open the exact passage behind a number, highlighted on its page.
- Use the same file again in later chats. It stays in your Library.
- Read PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, and photos of paper.
What Tatsu cannot do
- Answer from a file you never added. When the answer is not there, it should say so.
- Always find the exact line. Sometimes it finds only the document, and the number says so.
- Decide for you. You read the line and judge.
How it fits with your Library, memory and apps
A file you add stays in your Library, so a question next month can cite it again. Attachments from your mail can join it too: connect your email. Tell Tatsu how you like answers, for example short and with page numbers, and it remembers. You can see, edit or forget what it keeps in Settings, “Memory and instructions”. Tatsu can also turn a photo of a receipt into a row in an app you keep, such as an expenses app, and the photo stays in your Library.
You stay in charge
- You choose which files to add and what to ask.
- You check the line before you rely on an answer or pass it on.
- Tatsu asks before it deletes a file for good or moves it between your personal and team library. Anything it removes goes to Trash first, where you can restore it for at least 30 days.
Privacy
- The model providers that answer your questions commit to no training and to keeping none of your content afterwards.
- Your files are encrypted at rest and never sent to training datasets.
- Reading the text out of a file, ranking search results, voice input and web search run with other providers, under their own terms, named in our privacy policy.
- Several of the services we use run only in the United States, so your files can leave your country.
Questions
- What kinds of files can I ask about?
- PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, and photos of paper. Each file can be up to 1 GB, and you can add up to 20 files to one message.
- Can I ask about many files at once?
- Yes. Add up to 20 files to one message, or ask about files already in your Library. Each number in the answer tells you which file and which line it came from.
- What if the answer is not in my files?
- Tatsu should say it could not find it rather than guess. Whatever it answers, each claim carries a number, so you can see whether a line really backs it.
- Why does a number sometimes open the whole document?
- Tatsu found the document but not the exact passage, and the number tells you: “Exact passage couldn't be located, opens the source document”. Find the point yourself before you rely on it.
- Are my files used to train models?
- No. Your files are never sent to training datasets.
